Unnatural Causes

UNNATURAL CAUSES criss-crosses the country investigating the stories and findings that are shaking up conventional notions about what makes us healthy or sick. It turns out there’s much more to our well-being than genes, behaviors and medical care. The social, economic, and physical environments in which we are born, live and work profoundly affect our longevity and health — as much as smoking, diet and exercise.

Neccessary Treatment for Unnatural Causes

To bring a local perspective to the PBS series Unnatural Series: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? Wise TV and the Chicago Department of Public Health will present four follow-up programs from 9 p.m to 9:30 p.m on May 4, 11, 18, and 25. The locally produced programs, entitled Necessary Treatment for Unnatural Causes, will apply lessons of that night's episode of the nationally prodcued series to Chicago. Each half hour will include a lively panel discussion about what is being done in Illinois and, in particular, the Chicago area to ensure equal access to top-notch health care. Hosted by Dr. Terry Mason, Chicago Commissioner of Health, these discussions feature some of the local experts on healthcare for the disadvantaged.

Japanland
"How could I have been so naive?" asks Karin Muller, creator of Japanland, an unique documentary attempting to go beyond Japan's carefully portrayed public identity. Alone with no crew, no fixers or translators, and armed with a love of judo and lots of chutzpah, Karin ventured into Japanese life for a year, getting to see and film between the layers of this enigmatic and complex society. Follow her into places few gaijins have been before, for a glimpse of the real Japan.
Simon Schama's Power of Art
With Schama’s trademark style of passionate storytelling, the series uses a mix of dramatic re-enactments, atmospheric location shooting and spectacular art photography to create a cause-and-effect analysis of the creative process, placing viewers in a vortex of visual imagination, individual biography and cultural history.
Edens Lost and Found
Each one-hour program examines the unique environmental, economic and social issues that each of these great cities face. Interviews with citizen activists, politicians, urban planners and urbanites reveal how passion combined with innovative strategies can address the widespread problems facing many of America's environments today.
